With planning. The lanes down from the old high street to the harbour are steep, narrow and in places cobbled, and several have no standing at all. Nothing down there is quoted without looking at the approach — where a full-size vehicle cannot get close we shuttle from the nearest legal point.
Regular work. The buildings along the Leas are handsome and their lifts were fitted long after the stairs were built, so the questions are whether the lift takes furniture, whether it needs booking, and how tight the stairwell turn is. We ask all three before pricing.
Restricted, and worse in season. The seafront and the roads behind are controlled, there is very little off-street standing on the Victorian stock, and summer fills the central bays early. We agree the loading point at survey and start early where the dates allow.
On fixings and ironwork, yes. Gate hinges, railings and outbuilding doors on the seafront side are frequently not what they look like, and we would rather find that at survey than by leaning on something.
Better placed than almost anywhere in the country. The Eurotunnel terminal is on the town's doorstep, which means a European load from here is at the crossing inside the first leg rather than after a day of motorway.
Volume, access at both ends, how much packing you want done, and distance. In Folkestone the access line is genuinely large — a harbour-lane cottage and a Cheriton semi are not the same day at the same volume.
No. And on the old-town and clifftop stock it is not optional: the lane, the standing point and the stairwell decide the day, and none of them are visible from a room count.
For the suburban stock, usually. For the old town, the Leas and anything on a steep approach we would rather come and drive it ourselves.
Regularly. The seafront and the Leas have a great deal of it and much of the centre is a conservation area. Boards and padding go down before anything moves.
Veneer and inlay, marble and glass tops, gilt, large mirrors and framed work. The Creative Quarter also means a fair amount of artwork, which gets purpose-made cases rather than bubble wrap.
Yes, and it is its own kind of job. Work in progress, framed and unframed pieces, materials and equipment — all of which want different handling from household contents. Tell us what is actually in the studio.
Uprights routinely, with the correct board and straps. Grands we assess first, and out of an upper-floor Leas flat with a turned stair we would rather bring in a piano specialist.
Goods in transit and storage cover are in place, with the usual conditions around owner-packed cartons and items of unusual value. Declare anything genuinely valuable at survey and we will confirm in writing what applies.
Yes — wrapped, listed on an inventory and racked indoors, collected as part of the same move. Coastal chains run long and a lot of the older stock needs work before anyone moves in.
The load stays on the vehicle or goes into store overnight rather than onto a pavement. We tell you plainly what that means for the booking rather than sending a surprise invoice.
On the Leas and the clifftop roads, yes. An onshore gale genuinely changes what is sensible with a high-sided vehicle and an open tailgate, and we will move a start time rather than push through it.
Hythe and Sandgate are ours. Dover and Ashford have their own coverage on our network and we do not poach them; for Kent-wide or long-distance work the county site is the better fit.
As soon as you have a date, even provisional. Summer and month-ends go first here, and the seaside towns get busier in season than inland ones do.
We do, built from the survey inventory. Since the UK left the EU a household move needs a proper packing list and the destination country's transfer-of-residence process, and each of the four differs.
