The Creative Quarter is the most characterful part of Folkestone and the least convenient. Steep cobbled lanes, flats above workshops, and a harbour at the bottom of all of it.
The approach is the job
The lanes running down from the old high street are steep, narrow, cobbled in places, and in several cases have no standing whatsoever. A full-size vehicle frequently cannot reach the door.
So these are looked at before they are quoted. Where the vehicle cannot get close we shuttle from the nearest legal point with extra hands — in the quote, in advance, rather than a conversation on the morning.
Studios, galleries and artwork
This quarter means we move more artwork than most town firms, and it is a different job from household contents. Framed work gets purpose-made cases rather than bubble wrap. Unframed pieces and work in progress get boards and interleaving. Materials, plan chests and equipment are surveyed as their own category.
Loading windows on the lanes are narrow, so tell us when a piece has to be gone by as well as what it is.
The regeneration stock
Down by the harbour and along the seafront, newer development with proper communal doors, goods lifts and a loading arrangement. The easiest addresses in the quarter by a wide margin.

Can a vehicle get down the lanes?
Sometimes, and rarely to the door. The lanes from the old high street to the harbour are steep, narrow and cobbled in places, with almost no standing. We look at the approach before quoting and shuttle where we must.

What is the housing like?
Flats above shops, galleries and workshops on the old lanes, period cottages on the steeper streets, and newer regeneration stock down by the harbour and seafront.
Is the new-build easier?
Considerably. Proper communal doors, goods lifts in the taller blocks, and somewhere to load. The constraint is a booking process rather than the building.
